Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park with snow on the peaks in early summer

The Best Time To VisitGlacier National Park

Mid July through mid September is the surest window for the whole of Going-to-the-Sun Road, open end to end. If you want the road with no cars, come in May or June, when the alpine section is closed to cars and open to bikes. The park says the road has typically been fully open by early July and stays open until about the third Monday of October, weather permitting.

Updated October 22, 2026. Conditions change: check nps.gov before you ride.

There is no wrong month to see Glacier, but each one gives you a different park. Here is what to expect. Opening dates move with the snowpack every year, so treat the months below as the pattern, not a promise.

The Short Answer By Goal

  • The whole Sun Road by car: mid July through mid September.
  • The Sun Road on a bike with no cars: May and June, hiker-biker season.
  • Warm lake days: July and August.
  • Golden larches: mid to late October.

When The Road Opens And Closes

The alpine section of Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass has no set opening date. The park plows it each spring and opens it when the crews and the weather allow. In the park’s words, the road has typically been fully open by early July, and it typically stays fully open until the third Monday of October, though weather can close it sooner.

The park’s own table of Logan Pass dates shows how much the opening moves. From 2016 through 2022 the pass opened on June 16, June 28, June 22, June 22, July 13, June 25 and July 13. The 2022 opening came late after an exceptional avalanche year, and 2020’s was delayed by COVID-19. Closing dates in that stretch ran from September 25 to October 16, except in 2017, when a fire closed the west side on September 3. The table on nps.gov runs through 2022; for this year, the park’s road status page is the only source that counts.

May And June

Spring is our busiest season. The lower road near West Glacier is open all year, and as the plows work uphill, the stretch above the vehicle closure belongs to walkers and riders. You pedal past Avalanche Creek and up toward the West Tunnel and the Loop, as far as that week’s closure allows, with no cars. The park moves the hiker-biker closure point weekly on Thursdays, keeps riders behind the road crews Monday through Thursday while they plow, and keeps the avalanche hazard closures in place at all times. It warns that riders who pass a closure can face a fine of up to $5,000. In 2026 there were no shuttles during hiker-biker season, so you ride up and you ride back.

Expect rain and cool days, even in June. The park says rainy days and cooler temperatures are common in spring, and it is 10 to 15 degrees cooler at Logan Pass than in the valley. Bring layers. Our Going-to-the-Sun Road biking guide covers distances, the climb and what to pack, and the road status page carries the park’s current alerts.

July And August

The road is open end to end most years by early July, and this is when the park is busiest. The park says the Logan Pass parking lot usually fills by sunrise and stays busy all day. In 2026 the park added three-hour timed parking at Logan Pass from July 1 through Labor Day, and a ticketed express shuttle to the pass booked on Recreation.gov. Hot days and cool nights are the rule; valley highs can pass 90 degrees while the pass stays much cooler.

Bikes are still welcome on the road in summer, with one rule to plan around. Through September 27, the park prohibits bicycles eastbound from Apgar to Logan Pass between 12 pm and 6 pm, and westbound from Logan Pass to Apgar between 3 pm and 6 pm. Start early to ride before the afternoon closure.

September

From 2016 through 2022 the road stayed open into October in four of the seven years, and an early storm can close it sooner. The park says temperatures begin cooling in fall and notes that snow can fall at lower elevations as early as mid September, so check the forecast the night before and pack a warm layer. The afternoon bike closure on the Apgar to Logan Pass section ends after September 27.

October

The park says western larch turns golden yellow in mid to late October. The alpine section typically closes for the season around the third Monday of October, and an early storm can close it before then. Once it closes to cars, the lower road is still a beautiful ride on a cold, clear day. We rent through the fall; call ahead for late season hours.

November Through April

The alpine road is closed and the lower valleys are under snow. From December, while Whitefish Mountain Resort is open, it is ski bike season in Whitefish. If you are here in winter, read how to ride a ski bike.

Planning The Rest Of The Trip

Whenever you come, an e-bike is the easiest way to see the road. Rent an e-bike for Glacier from our Whitefish shop, about 25 miles and a half-hour drive from West Glacier.
