Yes. Glacier National Park allows e-bikes on its paved roads, unpaved roads and bike paths, as long as the motor is under 750 watts and runs only while you pedal. Every rental e-bike at Montana E-Bikes rides inside those rules.
Updated October 22, 2026. Conditions change: check nps.gov before you ride.
The park’s rule, in the park’s words
The National Park Service page on bicycling in Glacier says: “Electric bicycles (e-bikes) are allowed if the motor is less than 750 watts (1 hp) and engaged only while pedaling.”
So an e-bike is welcome where any bicycle is welcome: “Bicycles are allowed only on paved roads, unpaved roads, and multi-use paths (bike paths), unless otherwise posted.” And, like any bicycle, “Bicycles are not allowed on any of Glacier’s hiking trails or in any backcountry areas.”
What that means on a Montana E-Bikes rental
Every e-bike in our rental fleet is set up to ride inside the park’s rules. You pedal, the motor helps, and you ride the same roads and bike paths as every other cyclist in the park.
Inside the park you also follow the rules for any bike: “A fee is charged when entering the park via bicycle.” When the road is open to cars, ride single file, use the pull-outs to let traffic by, and stop at a pull-out “when four or more cars have stacked up behind them.” In low light and between sunset and sunrise you need a white light or reflector up front and a red one at the back.
Where e-bikes can ride in Glacier
- Going-to-the-Sun Road, including the car-free spring weeks of hiker-biker season. Read our guide to biking the Sun Road for the closures, the climb and what to bring.
- Camas Road and the Inside North Fork Road on the park’s west side. Both are on our Where to Ride page.
- The park’s four bike paths: the Fish Creek bike path, the paved path from Park Headquarters to Apgar, the old Flathead Ranger Station trail, and the section of Inside North Fork Road between Camas Creek and Logging Creek, which the park lists as currently restricted to vehicles.
When bikes are kept off the Sun Road
In summer, once the road is fully open to cars and through September 27, the park closes the Apgar to Logan Pass section to bikes at the busiest hours: “bicycles are prohibited from Apgar to Logan Pass going eastbound between 12 pm and 6 pm” and “from Logan Pass to Apgar going westbound between 3 pm and 6 pm.” In spring, hiker-biker closures move weekly and “Visitors are prohibited from going past the hiker/biker closures.”
Our Going-to-the-Sun Road status page carries the shop’s own dated reports from the road each season. The park’s official word is always nps.gov.
