Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park with snow on the peaks in June

Glacier National ParkIn June

June is the month the road changes. Early June is still hiker-biker season, with the alpine miles closed to cars and open to bikes. Sometime between mid June and mid July, depending on the snow, the park opens Logan Pass to vehicles and the whole road is drivable. The park says there is no set date and the road has typically been fully open by early July.

Updated October 22, 2026. Conditions change: check nps.gov before you ride.

June is two months in one. Here is how to plan for either version.

Before The Pass Opens

Until the plows finish, the road above the vehicle closure is open to bikes and closed to cars, with the hiker-biker closure points set each Thursday and riders kept behind the road crews Monday through Thursday while they plow. If the vehicle closure is at Avalanche Creek, it is 7.2 miles to the West Tunnel, 7.8 to the Loop, 12.5 to Big Bend and 15.5 miles with 3,208 feet of climbing to Logan Pass.

When The Pass Opens

The park lists no set date. From 2016 through 2022 Logan Pass opened to cars on June 16, June 28, June 22, June 22, July 13, June 25 and July 13; 2022 came late after an exceptional avalanche year, and 2020 was delayed by COVID-19. The park says the road has typically been fully open by early July. Once it opens, summer rules start: through September 27, bicycles are prohibited eastbound from Apgar to Logan Pass between 12 pm and 6 pm and westbound from Logan Pass to Apgar between 3 pm and 6 pm. Start early and the morning is yours.

The park’s road status page is where the opening is announced, and you can text GNPROADS to 333111 for the alert. Our status page carries the park’s current alert.

The Weather

The park says rainy, cool days are common even through June, and it is 10 to 15 degrees cooler at Logan Pass than at West Glacier. Days are the longest of the year, so an early start gives you a full day on the road.

Everything Else

No vehicle reservations were required in 2026. Check the park’s pages for lodge, campground and visitor center dates. For the pass itself in summer, the park ran three-hour timed parking and a ticketed shuttle from July 1 in 2026; read the vehicle reservation guide.
