Going-to-the-Sun Road is open end to end for most or all of September in most years, and the Logan Pass parking limits and shuttle end on Labor Day. The park warns that snow can fall at lower elevations as early as mid September, and the summer afternoon bike closure on the Apgar to Logan Pass section ends after September 27.

September is the last full month of the open road.
The Road In September
From 2016 through 2022 the road stayed open into October in four years; it closed on September 3, 2017 (a fire on the west side), September 29, 2018 and September 25, 2019. An early storm can close the alpine section for a day or for the season, so check the park’s road status the night before and our status page for the park’s current alert.
In 2026 the Logan Pass timed parking and the ticketed shuttle ended on Labor Day, September 7. After that, the three-hour limit no longer applied.
Riding In September
Until September 27 the summer bike rule still applies: bicycles are prohibited eastbound from Apgar to Logan Pass between 12 pm and 6 pm and westbound from Logan Pass to Apgar between 3 pm and 6 pm. After September 27 the afternoon closure ends; ride after dark only with a white front light and a red rear light or reflector, as the park requires. From Avalanche Creek to the Loop is 7.8 miles each way. The Sun Road biking guide has the distances and the parking.
The Weather
The park says temperatures begin cooling in fall and snow may fall even at lower elevations as early as mid September. The pass is 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the valley. Pack a warm layer, gloves and a shell.
Everything Else
Lodge and campground seasons end in the fall; check the park’s pages for each one. The larches have not turned yet; that is October.
