The crowds leave after Labor Day and the valley turns gold. Fall is the locals’ season, and the easiest time to see all of it.
Glacier Before It Closes
Going-to-the-Sun Road usually stays open end to end into October, and the park says the alpine section typically closes around the third Monday of the month. September and early October mornings on the road are the quietest of the open season. Read Glacier in September, Glacier in October and our status page for the park’s current alert before you drive up.
Larch Season
Western larch usually turns gold in the first half of October. The Whitefish Trail is the classic walk for it; its trailheads are a short ride from town, and the trail itself is non-motorized, so lock the e-bike at the trailhead and walk in. Hunting seasons run September through November on the surrounding land, so wear orange. Our Whitefish Trail guide has the trailheads and the rules.
The Lake
Whitefish Lake State Park’s day use area stays open all year, though the paddle rentals end on Labor Day. East Lakeshore Drive is at its best with the cottonwoods turning and the summer boat traffic gone. See Whitefish Lake and Where to Ride.
Downtown
Fall is when the restaurants have tables and the breweries have stools. Ride in on the river path, park the bike, and walk the few blocks of Central Avenue.
Before The Snow
Our e-bike season runs through the fall, and SNO-GO ski bike season starts when the resort opens. If you are here on the cusp, read how to ride a ski bike and Whitefish in winter.
Rent an e-bike in Whitefish; call the shop for late season hours.
