Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park with snow on the peaks in early summer

A Week In GlacierPlanned Around The Bike

Stay in Whitefish, ride Going-to-the-Sun Road early in the week while your legs are fresh, give Logan Pass its own day, and keep the lake and the town for the days between. From mid March until the road opens to cars in late June the alpine miles are car-free and open to bikes; once the whole road is open, usually by early July, bikes share it with cars and the park closes it to bikes in the afternoons. The park sets its dates each year, so check nps.gov before you travel.

Updated October 23, 2026. Conditions change: check nps.gov before you ride.

A week is the right length for Glacier. It leaves room for one big ride, one big drive, the lake, the town, and a day kept loose for the weather. This is how we would lay it out from our shop in Whitefish. Opening dates move with the snow every year, so check nps.gov before you set anything in stone.

Day 1: Arrive In Whitefish

Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell is about 11 miles and a 15-minute drive from our shop. Settle in and look over the week ahead. Our rentals book for one day or for two to seven days in a row. On a rental of two days or more the bikes stay with you overnight, and we send a charger home with you.

Day 2: Going-to-the-Sun Road By Bike

Ride it early in the week, while your legs are fresh and the forecast is still the one you planned around. How far you ride depends on the season:

  • From mid March until the road opens to cars, usually late June, the alpine section is closed to vehicles and open to bikes. You ride from the seasonal vehicle closure as far as the park’s hiker-biker closure allows, with no cars at all.
  • Once the whole road is open, usually by early July, start early from the Lake McDonald Lodge area. The climb to Logan Pass is 21 miles with 3,427 feet of climbing, and through September 27 the park closes the road to bikes from Apgar to Logan Pass going east from 12 pm to 6 pm.

E-bikes are allowed in the park when the motor is under 750 watts and runs only while you pedal, which is true of every bike we rent. Our Sun Road guide has the starting points, the mile markers, parking and what to bring.

Day 3: The Lake And The Town

A quiet day on purpose. Whitefish Lake begins at the north end of downtown: City Beach is about two miles from our shop by bike, and Whitefish Lake State Park on the west shore is under four, with a swimming beach and paddleboard and kayak rentals from June 15 through Labor Day. Ride out, swim, ride back for dinner.

Day 4: Logan Pass By Car

Once the road is fully open, give the pass its own day in the car. In 2026 the park did not require vehicle reservations anywhere in Glacier; instead Logan Pass had three-hour timed parking from July 1 through September 7 and a ticketed express shuttle booked on Recreation.gov. The park sets these rules each year. Leave the bikes at your lodging and go early.

Day 5: Ride Where The Cars Are Not

In spring, ride the car-free Sun Road a second time; the park moves its closures as plowing goes on, so you may get farther than the first time. In summer, our Tour of Whitefish follows the Whitefish River Trail to three state parks. Our where to ride pages list the rides by area.

Day 6: The Weather Day

The park’s weather page calls Glacier’s weather highly variable and says snow might occur at any time of the year. Keep one day loose. If the sky is clear, do the ride you liked best again. If it is not, spend it in downtown Whitefish.

Day 7: Leave Time To Leave

The airport is a 15-minute drive from the shop. If you are flying later in the day, a last ride before you go is the right send-off.

When To Come

The whole road is open end to end most years from early July through September. From mid March until the road opens to cars, usually late June, the alpine miles are yours without cars, on a bike. Our best time to visit guide goes month by month.
