April 24, 2026- Hello, lovely people! This is Gracie writing from Montana E Bikes, your new go-to Going-to-the-Sun Road update provider!

We spent this past Tuesday evening biking from Lake McDonald Lodge to the Loop, making a 26-mile round trip. Our 9-person crew had an amazing time soaking in the sunshine, warmth, and views. The road was in fantastic condition, and spring is really starting to show up.

One of my favorite parts of the ride is the tunnel that drips water as the sun reflects onto it, opening up into a gorgeous view of the snowy peaks.

Wildlife is out—we saw some deer and a black bear! Be sure to carry bear spray during your ride, and be respectful of the animals enjoying the place they call home.

While the weather has been on the cooler side over the past few days, the forecast is trending toward warmer, sunnier conditions. We should be seeing highs of 60°+ by the end of next week. That’ll make for beautiful riding and hopefully more progress on plowing and maintenance, opening up even more of the road.

Sunny days are ahead, and we can’t wait to see the adventures you all get out on!

April 21, 2026- Hey everyone—Josh here from Montana E-Bikes! The weather was so incredible that I snuck out of the shop with one of our awesome team members, Eric, and we headed up to Going-to-the-Sun Road. It turned into one of the most epic rides of the season so far. Road conditions were absolutely fantastic. The crews have done an amazing job clearing debris—there were barely any rocks, even through the tunnel area. Really impressive how well they’re maintaining the road for riders right now.

We parked at Lake McDonald Lodge with no problem and set out on a 26-mile round-trip ride up to The Loop. We took our time, stopped at waterfalls, hung out on a sandbar along the river, and had lunch at The Loop with our feet dangling over the wall. Tons of photos, lots of laughs, and just soaking in the scenery. One of our favorite parts of early-season riding is how bright and clean the snow looks on the mountains. With blue skies and fresh white snow, the views are honestly hard to believe. And getting to ride a road like this with no cars—it doesn’t get much better.

Today is shaping up to be another beautiful day, and riding conditions should be great all the way until dark. We do have a few cooler days ahead, but looking beyond that, next weekend is trending warmer and looking really promising.

April 19, 2026- Hello awesome people! Here’s your latest update on Going-to-the-Sun Road, straight from our guests who rode yesterday. They reported an amazing experience out there. Right now, the ride begins at Lake McDonald Lodge and goes up to The Loop. About 20% of the road still has some snow on the sides, but there is plenty of great riding area on blacktop. The road itself is wet, with some slushy areas along the edges, but no ice was encountered by any riders yesterday. With today’s sunny, beautiful weather, we expect continued melt and for the road to become clearer and better each day. It was also fun seeing photos of the bears that were out on the road yesterday. About half of our guests spotted a bear in the park, which is always a special part of the experience this time of year. Looking ahead, the next few days are shaping up to be absolutely beautiful, with near-perfect riding conditions. If you’ve been thinking about getting out for an early-season ride, now is the time.

Pro tip for today: don’t forget your gloves. One of the most common things we hear is how cold hands can get when riders forget them or wear gloves that are too thin.

April 17, 2026- Great news! We just got notified that the hiker biker turn around is at the loop. This ride from Lake McDonald Lodge to The Loop is 26 miles round-trip. This weekend is shaping up to be ideal weather, with a high of 56° on Saturday, 65° on Sunday, and 71° on Monday.

We also want to remind everyone that bears are active. We had guests recently encounter a mother with two new cubs. This time of year, bears frequently travel along the road, so it’s important to stay bear aware. We love seeing bears on rides, but please give them plenty of space. Park regulations require maintaining at least 100 yards of distance. This is their home, and we want to respect both them and their habitat.

Lastly, riders spotted mountain goats last week as well. If you keep an eye out while riding, you’ll often see them along the rock walls. Enjoy your riding this weekend!

April 16, 2026- Although it’s snowing today, we wanted to get a Going-to-the-Sun Road update out as we head into a beautiful stretch of weather. This weekend is shaping up to be ideal for riding, with a high of 56° on Saturday, 65° on Sunday, and 71° on Monday.

For the weekend, we’re expecting the ride to be at least 20 miles round-trip, with the potential for more. Currently, the ride starts at Lake McDonald Lodge and goes to Logan Creek, which is right around the 20-mile mark round-trip. However, we know the road is clear beyond that point and are hopeful the Park Service will open it further to the Loop starting Friday afternoon. We’ll keep you updated here.

April 10, 2026- We’ve got some exciting news this morning! Going-to-the-Sun Road is open for the weekend from Lake McDonald Lodge to Logan Creek, making for a 20-mile round-trip ride. The weather is looking absolutely fantastic, so it’s a perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy one of the most iconic roads in America. If you’re an early-season rider, this is your moment—highly recommend taking advantage of it!

Camas Road is also open, and some riders are combining both routes in the same day. While Camas is open to vehicles, traffic is very light right now, making it a great ride. It’s especially fun with a steady climb followed by a smooth, fun descent.

We haven’t had any confirmed bear sightings on the west side yet, but we expect that to change soon. We did have riders on the east side report seeing a grizzly on their ride.

April 9, 2026- We wanted to give everyone a quick update on Going-to-the-Sun Road. Yesterday we had a lot of riders out there, and it was an absolutely beautiful day. The current ride from the parking area from Lake McDonald Lodge is 11 miles round-trip and the turnaround is at Avalanche Creek. The road is clear, and conditions are great. Many riders are also taking time to hike Avalanche Lake and/or Trail of the Cedars. Avalanche Lake is open, though there are a few downed trees along the trail that you’ll need to navigate around.

April 3, 2026- Hey everyone! Quick update on today’s ride on Going-to-the-Sun Road: Parking is at Lake McDonald Lodge, and the GTTSR road is only open to the Avalanche trailhead (5.5 miles one way). Much of the road was still covered in slush and snow—about 3-4 inches deep in spots—and it is currently closed to bikes beyond Avalanche.

We had some friends and guests do the hike to Avalanche Lake today. The hiking trail is snowy, and there are quite a few downed trees you’ll need to navigate around, but the hike is still very doable—and absolutely beautiful this time of year.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, warmer weather is on the way. I expect most of the snow between Lake McDonald Lodge and Avalanche to melt off by midday. That said, be very cautious of ice and slick spots if you’re planning to ride. So far this season, we haven’t heard of any bear sightings on the rides we’ve done—but we’ll keep you posted as that changes.

April 1, 2026- We received confirmation that Going-to-the-Sun Road officially opened to biking today. However, access is currently limited—riders can only go about one mile to North Lake. One of the reasons we provide Going-to-the-Sun Road updates is because it can be difficult to get clear, real-time information from official sources. With thousands of riders heading up there through us, we’re able to gather accurate, firsthand updates on current conditions.

Today, the official announcement said the road would be open for just 1 mile, with access extended to the Avalanche Trailhead after 4 PM—and then Friday after 4 PM and through the weekend. However, we just had riders return who were able to make it nearly to The Loop before being turned around by the Forest Service. Weather doesn’t look great tomorrow, but starting Friday it’s shaping up to be excellent. We’ll keep sharing updates and keeping our website current so you know exactly what to expect in terms of access and conditions.

Another option, Camas Road is open and makes for a great early-season ride—especially with lighter traffic and beautiful scenery this time of year.

Starting Saturday, the forecast looks beautiful and riding conditions should be excellent. One of the best parts of going early in the season is the increased chance of seeing wildlife—it’s a special time to be in the park. Our brand-new rental fleet is ready to go, with bikes starting at just $99/day. If you’re planning to ride this week, give us a call or reserve online now.

March 29, 2026- We’ve got great news! Today we went into Glacier National Park and Going-to-the-Sun Road and met with a park ranger. The road is currently scheduled to open on Wednesday, April 1.

March 26, 2026- We wanted to share a quick update on the current status of Going-to-the-Sun Road for cycling and e-biking. At the moment, the road is closed to bikes beyond Lake McDonald Lodge, and the “No Biking” sign is still in place. Once conditions allow riding beyond the gate, that sign will be removed.

We came across a helpful update from Hungry Horse Newsthat includes current snow conditions and early projections. Based on that report, it’s looking like the road may open to biking beyond Lake McDonald Lodge around Wednesday, April 1st. If it opens sooner, we’ll let you know right away.

If you’re looking for a great ride in the park this time of year, Camas Road is a solid option. It’s fully paved and shared with vehicles, but traffic is typically very light this early in the season. We’ll continue to keep you posted as conditions change. In the meantime, enjoy the sunshine out there.

March 7, 2026- We wanted to share an early season update for those planning to ride Going-to-the-Sun Road. At this time, it is not safe for bicycling. Yesterday two people rode from the Lake McDonald Lodge gate to the Avalanche Trailhead area, and while sections of the road were clear, there were icy patches and significant black ice present. Beyond the Avalanche gate, the road is still snowy and icy with trees down across sections of the road, making it not rideable yet. Conditions can change quickly this time of year, but for now we recommend waiting until the road clears and temperatures warm up a bit more. We’ll continue monitoring conditions and will keep everyone updated as soon as riding becomes safe.

__________

March 4, 2026- Yesterday we headed up to Glacier National Park to see if riding season might be starting. When we arrived at the lodge gate, there was a sign posted that bikes are not allowed at this time. The good news is that the road looked really clear, which means the opening should be coming soon. As soon as bikes are allowed again, we’ll let everyone know right away.Stay tuned for updates on the opening date!

Nov 13, 2025- Rental & Going To The Sun Road Update: We want to remind everyone that we keep our fat-tire Aventon Aventure 3 e-bikes available for rent all winter long. Along with folks still riding around town or heading into Glacier, we have a lot of hunters who take them on  hunts, and quite a few anglers who use them for ice fishing trips. Whatever your adventure looks like, we’d love to get you set up with the right ride.

Going-to-the-Sun Road: We’re still seeing riders head up Going-to-the-Sun Road. Yes, it’s definitely chilly, but if you come prepared, it is unbelievably beautiful this time of year. The roads are wide open, the mountains are snow-capped, and the scenery is stunning. Right now, most riders are making it to The Loop or 1–2 miles beyond. Conditions change quickly. Roads have been wet but generally not icy, with the exception of the tunnel where ice tends to form. If you head up, stay alert for changing conditions, potential slick spots, and weather shifts—snow, rain, clouds, and the occasional burst of sunshine. Glacier National Park also issued a reminder that they do not want people biking on snow, so you must turn around at the snow line. And with so few people on the road this time of year, a couple of bears have been lingering in the area—so stay aware and keep your distance. If you have any questions about winter riding or want to reserve bikes, we’re always here to help!

October 31, 2025 —Wow — what an incredible stretch of riding we’ve had on Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park! We have had have riders up there every single day this week, and it’s been nothing short of beautiful. We’ve seen a mix of cold fall weather — crisp mornings, sun and clouds in the afternoons, and a touch of fog here and there. Our guests report the rides have been peaceful, quiet, and unbelievably beautiful. The tamaracks are glowing gold, the mountains are topped with fresh snow, and the views are next-level breathtaking. This is one of the most special times of year in Glacier — peaceful roads, golden fall light, and moments you’ll keep with you. For many of our guests, it’s been a bucket-list experience! Yesterday we hosted a couple from Louisiana on their honeymoon and they made it couple miles past The Loop and when they returned, they said it was one of most special days of their lives. Seeing people experience Glacier on a bike never gets old.

Road conditions: As of today, the road is clear until 2 miles past the loop and then it's snow covered. Glacier National Park sent out an alert that said they specifically don't want people biking on snow. So at the snow line you'll need to turn around and head back. Right now the round trip ride from Avalanche to the turn around is around 20 miles total.

Wildlife: This week has been amazing for wildlife sightings — about half of our riders saw bears, and one lucky group even got to watch a moose for a while. Always keep distance, enjoy quietly, and let them do their thing.

Tips: ✔️ Bring gloves (trust us — you’ll want them on the ride down) ✔️ Layer up — weather can shift quickly up top ✔️ Carry bear spray ✔️ Give wildlife space — always ✔️ Take your time & enjoy every second

Oct 23, 2025- Bears, Mountain Goats & Epic Fall Views on GTTSR ! Today’s ride on Going-to-the-Sun Road was nothing short of unbelievable. With so few riders out, the road was peaceful and quiet — one of the many reasons I love fall riding in Glacier. The stillness, crisp air, and golden light made every mile feel special. ✨ The larches (tamaracks) are turning their signature yellow-gold right now, and the views are absolutely stunning. Fall really is one of the best times of year to experience this ride. On the way up, I spotted two different groups of mountain goats! Since it’s the start of mating season, they often gather like multigenerational families — last year’s offspring with their moms and males hanging nearby. I spent a while just watching them through my binoculars. Then on the way down — an incredible surprise — a black bear and her two cubs! I watched as they grazed and played. The cubs even climbed a tree while mom sat below keeping watch. No one else around… just pure Glacier magic. The ride was 23 miles round-trip, and Road Camp made the perfect lunch stop. I started around 12:45 p.m. and finished by 4 p.m., taking my time to soak it all in. Cool, breezy, peaceful — and yes, I was very thankful for my beanie and gloves. (Pro tip: never forget your gloves on this ride… your fingers will thank you on the descent!)

Oct 21, 2025- Great Sunny Weather This Week on Going To The Sun Road!  Last week brought some of the most unbelievable fall riding conditions we’ve ever seen on Going-to-the-Sun Road. The views were breathtaking — vibrant fall colors, abundant wildlife, and perfectly clear pavement. It looks like we’re in for another beautiful stretch of sunny weather, and according to the forecast, this may be the final week to ride GTTSR before snowier weather sets in. If you’ve been thinking about one more ride, now’s the time — get out there and enjoy it while you can! On the west side of Glacier National Park, the Going-to-the-Sun Road is currently closed to vehicles from Avalanche Campground to Logan Pass, but open to bikers and e-bikers from Road Camp— about 11 miles each way (22 miles round trip). It’s one of the most stunning stretches in the park — and absolutely perfect for riding this time of year! We’ll keep you updated on any changes and share the latest road conditions as the week goes on.

 Spring Riding Reminders

  • Wildlife is active. Bears and other animals are on the move — keep your bear spray accessible and stay alert.

  • Dress for the chill. Weather changes quickly this time of year, so bring layers and gloves.

  • Watch for ice. You may encounter icy patches on shaded sections of the road — slow down and ride carefully. If you come across any ice, please don’t try to ride over it — it’s safest to hop off and walk, especially through the tunnel.

  • Be courteous. You might see a few work vehicles as crews begin putting in railings — give them plenty of space and a friendly wave.
